MSRTC Expands Shivneri Bus Service with 200 New Volvo Buses

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is set to expand its premium Shivneri bus service beyond the popular Mumbai–Pune route. The state government plans to introduce the service on several major intercity routes across Maharashtra.State Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik announced the expansion on Wednesday. He said the move will improve comfortable and reliable travel options for passengers across the state.

A Trusted Service Since 2002

MSRTC launched the Shivneri bus service in 2002. Over the years, it has become one of the most trusted premium bus services in Maharashtra.Passengers appreciate the service for its punctuality, comfortable seating, and safe travel experience. Although fares are slightly higher than regular buses, Shivneri continues to attract strong demand. Middle-class travellers form a large share of its passenger base.According to the transport department, the service has remained profitable because of its consistent quality and reliability

200 New Volvo Buses Planned

To support the expansion, MSRTC has started the tender process to procure 200 new Volvo buses. These buses will feature modern technology, improved safety systems, and better passenger comfort.Once the new fleet joins the service, Shivneri buses will operate on several key intercity routes across Maharashtra.

MSRTC plans to introduce Shivneri buses on the following routes:Nashik – PuneNashik – Chhatrapati SambhajinagarNashik – Jalgaon – DhulePune – KolhapurPune – SangliPune – SolapurNagpur – ChandrapurNagpur – Amravati – AkolaThese routes will expand the premium service to more passengers across the state.

MSRTC already operates electric e-Shivneri buses on several busy routes. These eco-friendly buses run on:Dadar – SwargateDadar – ShivajinagarBorivali – SwargateBorivali – ShivajinagarThane – SwargateThane – ShivajinagarCommuters have responded positively to these electric buses. The strong response highlights the growing demand for environmentally friendly public transport.

MSRTC offers special fare concessions on Shivneri services.Women passengers and senior citizens aged between 65 and 75 receive a 50 percent discount on fares. Passengers above 75 years of age can travel free of charge.The transport minister said these benefits are expected to increase ridership on the new routes.

Sleeper Shivneri Buses for Long-Distance Travel

Out of the 200 new buses, 30 will be sleeper coaches. MSRTC will introduce these Sleeper Shivneri buses on selected long-distance routes.These buses will replace existing non-air-conditioned sleeper services. The new coaches will offer air-conditioned cabins, comfortable beds, and improved safety features.The move aims to provide a better overnight travel experience for passengers.
