OHM Global Mobility has launched 130 air-conditioned electric buses in Chennai as part of Phase 2 of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation’s (MTC) electric bus programme. This will result in supply and daily operations of 500 electric buses under the second phase.
OHM Global Mobility Begins Phase 2 E-Bus Deployment
OHM Global Mobility, the electric mobility arm of Ashok Leyland, has commenced the Phase 2 rollout of electric buses for Chennai’s Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC). The company has introduced the first batch of 130 air-conditioned electric buses, marking another step towards expanding zero-emission public transport in the city.
The buses are part of an order for 500 electric buses that OHM Global Mobility will progressively supply and operate for MTC under the programme. The electric buses are manufactured by Switch, Ashok Leyland’s electric vehicle subsidiary.
The first 130 buses were flagged off at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, Transport Minister Vijay Tamilan Parthiban, Transport Secretary Nirmal Raj, MTC Managing Director D. Mohan and senior OHM Global Mobility officials.
OHM Global Mobility Builds on Phase 1 Operations
The Phase 2 rollout builds on OHM Global Mobility’s existing electric bus operations in Chennai. The company said its Phase 1 electric buses have collectively covered more than 3 crore kilometres.
OHM also stated that its Phase 1 depots achieved more than 99% schedule adherence, highlighting the operational reliability of its electric bus fleet.
Brijesh Gubbi Suresh, CEO of OHM Global Mobility, said the launch of the first 130 buses marks an important milestone in Chennai’s transition towards sustainable public transportation.
Phase 2 Fleet Operations and Maintenance
As part of the Phase 2 programme, OHM Global Mobility will provide fleet operations and maintenance services in addition to supplying and deploying the buses.
The company said its capabilities cover electric mobility, fleet management, charging infrastructure, maintenance and Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) solutions. The remaining buses will be deployed progressively across Chennai.
