Mercedes asserts that formally known as the G 580 with EQ Technology, it is even better than the standard G Wagon off-road.
Officially named the G 580 with EQ Technology, Mercedes-Benz India has now revealed that the electric G-Class will first be produced in India on January 9, 2025. On the same day the corporation might also reveal prices. Originally presented in concept form at the Bharat Mobility Show in January this year, the electric G-Class will eventually go on sale worldwide in mid-2024.
The new Electric G WagonHas four electric motors, one for each wheel; Gets minor design changes over regular G-class.Claims 470km on a 116kWh battery.
Mercedes-Benz claims that driving off-road, the new G-Class EV is a “uncompromised” machine that can surpass its combustion-engined sister. The long name, G 580 with EQ Technology, marks a change in the naming approach for electric Mercedes vehicles and also shows how the G 580 was designed to be a G-Class that simply happens to be battery-driven.
Mercedes G 580: design changes and inside
With a minor redesign of the grille and unobtrusive EQ emblems to distinguish it, the G 580 is practically exactly like the G 450d. To enhance aerodynamic efficiency, though, there has been work on a new A-pillar design and a new spoiler lip on the front of the roof.
The G 580 also has a fresh, aerodynamically designed bonnet, which produces a drag coefficient of 0.44, down from 0.48Cd for the most recent G 450d. One can substitute a similarly styled charging cable holder for the optional spare wheel holder fixed on the rear boot. Apart from some switchgear with new EV-specific purposes, the inside stays essentially the same as the conventional G-Class.
Mercedes G 580: off-road gear, battery and powerplant
Four electric motors in the G 580 run one wheel of the automobile. With a whopping 1,165 Nm of torque, each motor generates 147hp for a maximum output of 587hp. Every motor also gets an individual 2-speed gearbox. Although Mercedes claims the G 580 has a top speed of 180 kph and a 0-100 kph time of less than 5 seconds, the true emphasis is on providing off-road capability. Claimed range of 470km and fast charging capacity of up to 200kW make the 116kWh battery shared with the EQS appealing.
With a redesigned rigid axle at the back containing the integrated electric drive unit and virtual rather than mechanical differential locking to provide optimal torque vectoring, the G 580 has the same independent front suspension. Its water wading capacity is 850mm, 100mm higher than the standard G, and there is a shiftable low-range gearbox.
Apart from that, the G 580 has three customised features to help off-road driving: G-Turn, which lets it rotate 720 degrees on the spot; G-Steering, which lowers the turning circle letting it pivot around a single wheel; and an off-road crawler mode running as low as 2 kph. The G 530.
Mercedes GLE, GLS, S-Class facelifts not meant for 2025
Although the S-Class facelift and second mid-lifetime modifications for the GLE and GLS SUVs are expected to be unveiled shortly for global markets, these cars are not intended for an India release next year. Mercedes’s India line-up will be sold through 2025 after first receiving revisions for the GLE and GLS in 2024. The S-Class, in its current avatar will likewise soldier on for another year.
